Stuffless Society

--- 2007-05-20 ---

Might we someday see a largely stuffless society, where people spend far less money on real goods than today? We are moving towards virtual everything, and we have been doing this for a while now. Pornography stands in as a substitute for real world sexual promiscuity and adventure. Violent video games stand in as a substitute for real world aggression. Television and films stand in for real world adventure and experience.

How long before it is common for a virtual environment, such as Second Life, to stand in as a substitute for real world things - when it's not only cheaper to have things in a virtual world rather than the real world, but there's also more flexibility in being able to swap out one's things on a whim as one gets tired of them? True digital living might expand upon the paperless society to give rise to the stuffless society.
