One of the roles of the film/television/game entertainment industry - I believe - is to lull the masses into a stupor of apathy and complacency, so that they are essentially neutralized from having any significant power to transform or meddle in the controlling economic and political forces. Keep them amused, keep them distracted, in other words.
I must stress the choice of the word "role", since I don't believe it is necessarily the deliberate intent of the entertainment industry to perform this role. Anymore than it is, for example, the intent of a kidney to participate in a murder, simply because that kidney happened to belong to the body of a convicted murderer.
While there may be some possibility of conspiratorial influences in the entertainment industry, I'm disinclined to believe that the industry - as a whole - is the willing participant in a conspiracy. Indeed, I think it may be something more subtle and more insidious than a conspiracy - if you can imagine such a thing. Just one cooperative and supportive function performed as part of the will of a more complex system, and where the individual participants do not have a clear knowledge of the greater plan to which they are contributing.
