There is a battle being waged right now, between the humanists and the supernaturalists. And contrary to what you might believe, it is the humanists who are winning this battle. What we witness now, in the face of the unrelenting onslaught of scientific discovery and understanding, is what I like to think of as the "Holy Reflex" - the last desperate convulsions of a meme being that has had a comfortable hold on human thought for millennia. Like any being, it does not wish to die. The recent rapid rise in religious fundamentalism - both on the Christian and Islamic sides - and the seemingly impending clash in civilizations is parallel to the recent rapid advance in scientific knowledge and, I believe, really represents the last death throes of this supernaturalist meme being.
