Snake Oil Leadership

--- 2004-11-14 ---

A fundamental flaw in the constitutions of many democratic nations is the complete lack of any requirement that the elected heads of government be qualified in the skills and science of diplomacy. How can we ever expect to achieve the peaceful resolution of serious conflicts when we don't require heads of state to be qualified in the science of conflict resolution? All the tragic wars in history are the result of failed diplomacy and failed leadership.

Democracies allow the electorate to elect any old leaders that take their fancy - who then all too often turn out to be unfit to lead. When so many other activities in life require that people become certified as being qualified to be practitioners in a particular field, it is completely ridiculous to permit people to be elected as heads of government when they are unfit to handle the very fundamental core task of resolving disputes without resorting to war, destruction, and bloodshed.

We are not permitted to drive a vehicle based on popularity or charisma, so why should we be permitted to lead nations based on merely our appeal to the electorate? Any one who wishes to be considered for election to the highest offices of government should also be required to prove that they are qualified in those key skills requisite for leading a nation. Only once such requirements are put in place for political leaders will the nations of earth start to see leadership based on science and grounded in sanity, rather than leadership that sways to the emotional whims of societies that get whipped up into frenzy and become gripped by group hysteria. The quackery of "snake oil leadership" has to end for us to see world peace.
