Short-sighted "National Interests"

--- 2000-12-17 ---

The Nationalistic view of the world regards nations almost as different players in a global sports match, where each nation is trying to come out victorious. This anachronistic view of the world belongs to Dinosaurs of the past, but unfortunately, many of these Dinosaurs still roam the earth and perpetrate their tyrrany over us.

Some nationalists, who would claim to be evolved, may like to put forward the idea that nations can still be competitors without necessarily resorting to war - somewhat like using a football match as a substitute for war in order to satisfy the competitive urge in mankind. I would argue, however, that such a notion is still potentially devastating to mankind. Rather than regarding nations as competing sides in a "gentlemanly" sports match, I would propose that nations be ragarded as different national headquarters for a single global enterprise - all working together towards a common goal - the wellbeing and prosperity of human beings and the Earth life system that cradles us.

Nations have to start learning the concept of enlightened self-interest. No longer can nations pretend that they can isolate themselves from events in the world outside of them. We have become very connected. And from this connectedness flow benefits as well as reponsibilities. We benefit from trade, the exchange of ideas, sharing of innovation, cultural enrichment, the ability to travel and experience, wide varieties of wonderful cuisine, an enthralling diversity of different artforms, and on, and on. And the price tag to this windfall of benefits is the reponsibility to work to support one another, and not to fall into the trap of looking only so far as our own immediate and obvious nationalistic self-interests.
