Right to Insurrection?

--- 2007-12-15 ---

In the end, what holds a nation's government truly accountable, if not the outright fear of its own citizenry? Is not one of the purposes of the US Constitution's 2nd Amendment the protection of the People from abuse of powers by an unscrupulous Federal government? A well armed People can not only protect the integrity of the Union against insurrection from wayward splinter groups, but can also provide the very coordinated insurrection necessary for protecting the people against tyrannical rule.

Now, when you create a society in which no threat of terrorism can ever be borne out, you inevitably also create a society in which a coordinated insurrection against tyranny can never materialize, thereby extinguishing the democracy. This kind of safe and stable climate might suit the purposes of the wealthy elite, but does it serve the interests of the nation? Should we care more about the wealth of our plutocracy than the health of our democracy?

The cost of some uncertainty and risk is well worth the many benefits of a viable democratic state. We should reject the base urge to seek safety. We should reject the urge to accept the promise of security that is offered by those who will invariably turn around and abuse the power over us that those mechanisms of safety provide to them.
