Let us not turn America into a fascist state in response to the provocation of 9/11. Let calm heads prevail. 9/11 happened as a result of historical failures in our policy - both foreign policy and domestic security policy. On the foreign policy front, the whole Osama bin Laden mess was created by our government, as was the whole Saddam Hussein mess.
9/11 really was the price we paid for the strategic messing around with foreign nations as though the consequences to the lives of their citizens meant absolutely nothing to us. In a strategic move in the Middle East, we helped to destroy the government of a foreign country - namely Iran. This lead us into meddling with the government of Iraq, for expediency. So, the Saddam Hussein mess was created. Then, in a power struggle with the former Soviet Union, we used the people of Afghanistan as pawns. And thus the Osama bin Laden mess was created.
The consequence in human suffering in those nations was largely ignored by an apathetic and ignorant American population, more concerned with cheap oil than morality. And, no, I'm not talking about the "morality" of proclaiming masturbation a sin, or homosexuality an affront to God Almighty. I'm talking about the morality of not subjecting other people to terror and suffering for your own economic convenience.
