Whence does our concept of matter originate? Matter is something which we consider to be a primitive. I would argue that matter itself is a function - a function of which we cannot determine the arguments. In other words, there are no concrete things. Each thing we consider to be concrete is just a function of another more primitive thing. We consider something to be primitive or concrete when we are not yet able to determine what it is a function of or what function it is of something else which we know exists. Ultimately, each thing is a function of every other thing and there exists no absolute starting point. Any starting point we may chose is completely arbitrary. Our reality consists of no substance as we typically understand the term, but rather an elaborate set of relationships - a collection of rules or patterns.
