Xmas for Refugees

--- 1996-12-26 ---

It's just been Christmas. Enjoyed the first fairly sane Christmas since arriving in America. Small party, good people, conversation. Antelopes are people too. The notion came up how so many Californians are merely refugees - Americans or otherwise. Indeed, I am a refugee. An African who never was. An American who wants to be. Yet I still doubt. It's so easy, growing up in another part of the world, to hold some form of disdain for the "American Dream". There are many good things about this nation. I could make it my home. Yet I always feel a little uncomfortable about "buying into" the great American pride and arrogance. Well, I'll get over it.
