Bottom of the Barrel

--- 2008-10-14 ---

It is becoming increasingly clear that the band of "loyalists" now congealing around John McCain represents truly the "bottom of the barrel" of American society. Charging to the rescue of his flagging campaign are bigots, incoherent morons, and right wing nut jobs, and John McCain isn't exactly shooing them away.

At a recent rally, McCain was confronted with a question from a lady who obviously is incapable of thinking for herself, as evidenced by her incoherent and vacuous blathering. Her question was: "I gotta ask you a question. I don't... not...uhhhh....believe in... I can't trust Obama... I... I have... read about him... and he's not... he's not... he's a... ummmm.... he's an Arab! [pause] He's not? No?"

John McCain has tacitly allowed this to go on, to the extent that it benefits him in energizing his gatherings. He plays coy with us by suggesting that he comes to the defense of "that one", while all along gently coaxing the tone of his gatherings in the direction of this inevitable seething hatred and racist fervor. Now, it's not surprising that racist sentiments would enter into this election, but it's just sad for John McCain that there are so many bigots gravitating around his campaign now that it is frightening the decent folks away.

There is that cliched moment in horror movies, where the protagonist finds themselves stumbling blindly in the dark, over obstacles they cannot see, to then collapse and fall to the ground. As they try to gain their composure, fumble around, and then light a match to see where they are, the dim flickering light of their match reveals to their fright that they are lying amongst a heap of rotting human remains. It is the moment of true terror, when they realize what horror surrounds them.

This, I imagine, is what some McCain supporters are coming to realize, as they look around themselves at these rallies, as the shivers run down their spines in disgust at what they see surrounding them, and as they recognize the red in America's red, white, and blue - like some conscienced individual in the Deep South, back in the era before the civil rights movement, getting swept up in the fervor of a lynch mob and finding themselves a party to unspeakable acts that will gnaw at them for the rest of their lives.

I would imagine that right about now, all the good folks are rushing to the exits. It would not surprise me to see a total sea change in this campaign, with possibly an out and out landslide victory going to Obama.
